Hammock in Yeldegirmeni

We organised a project about electronic wastes in my summer internship in Tasarım Atölyesi Kadıköy. Aim of this project is raising awareness about recycling electronic wastes.

Firstly, we designed and distribute flyers to call for collecting electronic wastes from local people and local cafes of Yeldeğirmeni. After that we announced from Facebook for inviting designers to workshop of designing furniture from wastes.

First week of project, local people brought wastes to us and some people called us for bring their wastes from their homes and stores. So we walked in streets with our trolley that we designed to collect wastes from homes and stores.

In weekend, we meet with designers from Tasarım Atölyesi Kadıköy and volunteers to discuss design possibilities from electronic wastes. We split up to three groups for separate design projects. My group decided to use waste cables. We discussed about potentials of using cables and decided knitting cables like basket for making suitable surface to hammock.

We divided cables into groups by their lengths, thicknesses and colors. In horizontal direction, longer and thicker cables are used, but in vertical direction, shorter, thinner and colored cables are used. We knotted long and thick cables to wood slat and knitted other cables to horizontal cables. We formed the shape of hammock by using flexibility of cables.

Before making the hammock, we found a park near Tasarım Atölyesi Kadıköy to hang this. We hung hammock to two trees in this park.

We gave remaining wastes to municipality’s waste collection centre. After finishing project, local newspaper made news about our project.
